Soviet Food and Soviet Housing

I produced these two short videos as part of an online package on the 25th anniversary of the collapse of the Soviet Union. We asked Russians and other former Soviet citizens to describe aspects of daily life in the U.S.S.R. People shared common memories of iconic foods known across all 15 republics, as well as experiences of food shortages and standing in line.

In this second piece covering the Soviet collapse, people who lived through the last decades of the U.S.S.R. remember an era of housing shortages, when ordinary citizens had little say in where they lived, or with whom.
